By The Claude Thornhill Big Band. Edited by Jeffrey Sultanof and Rob DuBoff. Arranged by Gil Evans. Jazz. Score only. Published by Jazz Lines Publications (JL.JLP-7196S).This Gil Evans arrangement was part of a series of compositions based on classical themes written in 1947 for the Claude Thornhill Orchestra. The other titles were La Paloma, Maids of Cadiz, The Sabre Dance, Arab Dance, and Spanish Dance. The Troubador, based on Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, was performed live at the Glen Island Casino as part of a radio broadcast. This ambitious arrangement features 3 flutes (with piccolo doubles) along with 5 reeds doubling on clarinets and bass clarinets. There was no piano on the recording; however, we have included an optional piano part. In addition, the original parts were later modified so that this could be played without the 3 flutes. This publication is based on Gil's original score and includes the flutes as they are essential. However, included are alternate parts for the 2 horns in F (trumpet 4/trombone 3).
