Cantique de Jean Racine (Op. 11) is a work for mixed chorus and piano or organ by Gabriel Fauré. Written by the nineteen-year-old composer in 1864-5, the piece won Fauré the first prize when he graduated from the École Niedermeyer and was first performed the following year on August 4, 1866, with accompaniment of strings and organ. It was first published around 1875 or 1876 (Schoen, Paris, as part of the series Echo des Maîtrises) and appeared in a version for orchestra (possibly by the composer) in 1906.
This setting of a Latin text by Jean Racine is considered to be one of the most popular choral works in the repertoire and has been utilized in various religious ceremonies such as weddings and funerals. The piece is scored for SATB choir with piano accompaniment. Fauré’s texture is often very direct and uncomplicated, particularly in many of his choral works. Cantique de Jean Racine features mostly homophonic writing, with the piano keeping a steady rhythm in the background while the choir sings the melodic line in harmony. The choir often splits into two four-part sections, trading off between passages in homophony and counterpoint. The piece is in an elevated, hymn-like style and contains a sense of grandeur and reverence. Fauré captures this feeling primarily through sustained chords and powerful modulations, highlighting much of the harmonic and melodic content of the work. The emotional euphoria achieved in this piece is sure to bring a sense of awe and reverence to any performance.
