By Keith Terrett. By Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). Arranged by Keith Terrett. This edition: audio, pdf. Classical, Historic, Multicultural, Patriotic, Traditional, World. Full Orchestra. 30 pages. Keith Terrett #794909. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.1195736).
An edition of the original Haydn German National Anthem for full Classical Orchestra.
Joseph Haydn composed the melody for the German national anthem, Deutschlandlied, in 1797:
Original title:
Haydn's composition was originally called Kaiserhymne, or "Emperor's Hymn", and was written for the birthday of Francis II, the Holy Roman Emperor. The song was intended to be similar to Great Britain's "God Save the King".
Lyrics:
The lyrics for the German national anthem were written by August Heinrich Hoffman von Fallersleben in 1841. The poem was written during a time of growing nationalism in Germany, when many Germans wanted a unified country.
History:
The song was popular throughout the 19th century and became a symbol of German national identity after the formation of the German Empire in 1871. It was revived as the national anthem in 1922 during the Weimar Republic. The National Socialists kept it as the national anthem after seizing power in 1933, but today only the third verse is used.
