At a conference in 2017, the composer Ivan Fischer somewhat casually proposed a modification to the standard "Happy Birthday" melody, which he opined is difficult to sing and places musical emphasis in illogical spots. This arrangement for a clarinet choir is based on his melodic idea . . . and then adds new, unusual harmonies (jazz and minor chords). After a dramatic key modulation, this innovative and intriguing version of the age-old birthday song ends up on a satisfyingly happy and celebratory note. It is scored to work for either four or five clarinet voices.
