Jack Tar by John Philip Sousa Brass Quintet - Digital Sheet Music

By John Philip Sousa

Using recycled material as well as Sailor’s Hornpipe, this march was premiered June 25th, 1903 in London’s Albert Hall by a massive group with the royal family in attendance. It features a boatswain’s whistle (or bosun’s whistle or pipe), which I’ve notated in approximate pitches in the Trumpet 1 part. I recommend purchasing an authentic one, as the unique sound is difficult to fake, and the spirit of this march is a distinct naval flavor. This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. Jack Tar was composed in 1903, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2018. The piece is catalogued as Volume 4, No. 62.
