THE PIANO (The heart asks pleasure first) - GUITAR DUET For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.
Derek Hasted writes 'This is one of my most popular guitar duets...
This arrangement of "The Heart Asks Pleasure First" from the film "The Piano" makes for a fantastic guitar duet both to watch and to hear.
A small section of the original is omitted so that the piece fits two guitars like a glove, or perhaps two gloves...
The chords and harmonies will all seem familiar; the seductive mix of "3 pairs of two eighth notes" and "two sets of three eighth notes" - vertical hemiloas - create a bubbling effect that both players create and share. The piece is ideal for a concert, and there are two versions of the Part Score in this file… The "piano" version gives one player a part based on the original piano score right hand and one based on the left hand. This version means that Guitar Two plays the lower notes and tends to stay in first position, whereas Guitar One uses the full scope of the neck and is a little harder to play. The "swap over" version swaps the roles at each significant phrase boundary. A couple of notes have been changed to ease the transition from one pitch to another at the phrase boundaries, but the transitions are necessarily more awkward. It will require two equally matched players if the continuity and balance are to be preserved, but in return, both enjoy music of equal complexity.
The part scores are 3 pages, so they will just fit on a standard music stand with no page turns...
This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. Derek's website at www.derek-hasted.co.uk/smp lists all his arrangements by title and by "number of instruments", with links to soundclips and sample score.
