It would make for not only effective recital and lesson material but a place could be easily found for it in the worship service where it might serve as a general prelude, with the fugue possibly reserved for the postlude. The Prelude itself begins and is constructed as would be an improvisation in 6 parts on a single free theme (a method favored by Louis Vierne), only in compressed (shortened) form. Its theme is taken from a free voice appearing only once in the Fugue, in the soprano line of the subdominant entry. This free voice is extended slightly to create the theme for the Prelude, thus, the Prelude theme is hidden once in the Fugue which provides a sense of unity, albeit subtle and not so obvious, to the entire work, hence its peculiar value. The final entry of the Prelude's theme is harmonized chromatically and closes beautifully in the primitive gloom of the home key. The related 4 voice Fugue which follows is written in triple counterpoint with 2 countersubjects maintained throughout and draws its subject from the inverse of the b minor Op. 26 Fugue's subject. It begins on scale degree 1 and is supplied with a real answer in the dominant. It passes through all nearly related keys and finishes with great finality in 6 voices using a trill and with an anticipation on the penultimate chord. In this work the stretch for the hands is kept at an octave or less. Registration suggestions along with indications for hand division are included with the score. Length: 142 measures.
