Composed by Steven Monrotus. Contemporary Classical,General Worship,Repertoire,General Instructional,Recital. Score. 5 pages. Published by Steven Monrotus (S0.562137).

This work for two hands was written to pay homage to the memory of Louis Vierne, organist of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris 1900-1937.  By lacking an obligatory pedal part, it's entirely playable on a one manual pipe organ without pedals, an electronic keyboard with pipe organ samples, or a reed organ (harmonium).  A version adjusted for piano has also been prepared and is available separately from Sheet Music Plus under the title "Prelude International in Bb Major for Piano."  While it would make for effective recital and lesson material a place can be easily found for it in the worship service where it could serve as a quiet prelude or offertory.  This is a dreamy piece which proceeds at a moderately quick tempo and is constructed in the same 6-part form that Vierne taught his students to enlist when improvising on a single free theme and which he exemplified in his "24 Pieces en style libre Op. 31."  Its theme derives from rhythmic transformation of the main theme from "Variations on a cantus firmus in C Major Op. 4" by inverting the major 6th upward leap in the latter's melodic outline to a downward leaping minor 3rd.  This work is scored for light foundation stops with a Celeste stop in an expressive division reserved for the final entry of the theme.  The 6 different sections of the piece, particularly the development, repay careful study, as does the manner in which the triplet rhythm within a steady duple time alternates between the hands.  The irregular phrase lengths, triplet rhythms within a steady duple time, preference for the mediant key in the 2nd exposition, modulations to distant keys, consecutive 5ths deliberately woven into the harmony in 4 places (bars 8, 30, 39-40, 47) but never between outer voices, reentry of the theme employing a 2-part canon at the octave, and final chords with chromatic inflections -- ALL are reminiscent of the methods and vocabulary of the dedicatee.  In this work the stretch for the hands is kept at an octave or less.  Registrations suggestions along with indications for hand division are included with the score.  Length:  67 measures.  Duration:  3:25.  Composer Bio page:  OrganBench.com  .
